This learning program is designed to provide the technical knowledge and expertise required to implement a radiation safety plan for uranium exploration as required by mining safety legislation in many states of Australia. The course deals with the drafting and management of radiation safety programs for uranium exploration, transport of core and other samples, storage and analysis of samples in typical exploration and analysis environments.

The learning program is practical in nature - participants will be involved in a number of small group workshops and discussions centred on concepts and problems useful to RSOs. Topics include:

  • Interactions of radiation with matter
  • Naturally Ocurring Radioactive Material (NORM)
  • Detection and measurement of radiation
  • Sampling, testing and interpretation of ore/dust samples containing NORM
  • Transport of radioactive materials
  • Complying with State and Federal legislative requirements (Mining safety regulations while drilling, OHS and Radiation safety regulations while transporting, storing and testing)
  • Complying with State Mines Department guidelines and Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) guidelines and Australian Standards
  • Drafting and implementing a Radiation Safety Plan to meet regulatory requirements
  • Radiological risk assessment

Assessment for the course is a variety of customised operational RSO tasks (as specified in the legislative role of an RSO) in the workplace.


Class room based delivery at our venue, or delivered specifically for clients at their venue and contextualised to the client’s specific systems.


This learning program is not Queensland Radiation Health approved, because control of worker safety in uranium exploration is outside the scope of the Queensland Radiation Safety Act.
