Objective

This learning program is designed for existing RSO's who would like to write a NORM Management Plan as per the requirements of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines guidance note; "QGL 1: Guideline for Management of Naturally Occurring Radioactive Material (NORM) in Metalliferous Mines." The course has a short RSO refresher component in the morning and discusses all topics relevant to the production of a NORM Management Plan.

The remainder of the day is spent working in teams in a supported environment on standard RSO tasks like writing NORM Management Plan, conducting audits, storage of core samples, transport of NORM and other items, waste management planning, development, planning for internal radiation safety training and reviewing radiation safety and protection plans. Technical topics include:  

  • Aligning the mines SHMS objectives with the NORM Management Plan objectives
  • Facilitating risk assessments for the development of the NORM Management Plan
  • Identifying and gathering information on relevant practices at the mine
  • Ensuring the auditability of the NORM Management Plan
  • Transport of radioactive materials
  • Conducting internal audits of your NORM Management Plan
  • Complying with State and Federal legislative requirements
  • Complying with National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) and Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) guidelines and Australian Standards
  • Risk assessment

Assessment for the course is a variety of customised operational RSO tasks (as specified in the legislative role of an RSO) in the workplace.

Class room based delivery at our venue, or delivered specifically for clients at their venue and contextualised to the client’s specific systems.
