Radiation Safety for Laboratories

Accreditation
This learning program is a Queensland Radiation Health approved course number ED016.

Duration
One Day

Objective
This learning program is designed to meet the criteria for a “Use” license under the Queensland Radiation Safety Act 1999 for laboratory workers. The course covers radiation safety issues related to typical techniques, isotopes and quantities (activities) found in biology, biochemistry, pathology, genetics and radio pharmacy laboratories.

The learning program is practical in nature; participants will be involved in a number of small group workshops and discussions centred on concepts and problems useful to radiation laboratory workers. Topics include:

  • Basics of radiation physics
  • Units
  • Biological effects and measuring risk
  • Identification and control of internal and external hazards
  • Laboratory, work area and task design
  • Selection and use of radiation instruments
  • Contamination control and decontamination

Assessment for the course is competency based. The assessment instrument is a multiple choice and short answer open book exam of approximately 20 minutes duration. All questions must be answered correctly to achieve competency.

Delivery
Class room based delivery at our venue, or delivered specifically for clients at their venue and contextualised to the client’s specific systems.

Radiation Safety for X-rays

Accreditation
This learning program is a Queensland Radiation Health approved course number ED036.

Duration
One Day
Objective
This learning is designed to meet the criteria for a “Use” license under the Queensland Radiation Safety Act 1999 for users of Xray equipment (including XRD and XRF). The course covers radiation safety issues related to typical techniques, tube types, voltages and currents found in industrial, medical and security settings.
The course is very practical in nature; participants will be involved in a number of small group workshops and discussions centred on concepts and problems useful to radiation protection around X-ray equipment. Topics include:

  • Basics of radiation physics
  • Units
  • Biological effects and measuring risk
  • Identification and control of external hazards
  • Work area and task design
  • Selection and use of radiation instruments

Assessment for the course requires the participant to develop a safety checklist based on a relevant national or state radiation safety standard. Follow-up discussion will be conducted with participants who have difficulty with the assessment.

Delivery
Class room based delivery at our venue, or delivered specifically for clients at their venue and contextualised to the client’s specific systems.

Radiation Safety for Neutron Moisture Gauges, Industrial Gauges and Industrial Radiography

Accreditation
This learning program is a Queensland Radiation Health approved course number ED090.

DurationOne Day

Objectives
To develop or enhance the skills and knowledge required for the following:

  • users of neutron moisture gauges
  • workers and maintenance staff who work in an environment where Industrial Radiation Gauges are used
  • users of Industrial Radiography Equipment

The training explains the risks related to radiation exposure, discussions of the most likely accidents involving the sources, the design safety features of the sources used in the workplace and the related basic operational safety systems used in the workplace.

Delivery
Class room based delivery at our venue, or delivered specifically for clients at their venue and contextualised to the client’s specific systems.
