Objective
This learning program is designed to meet the criteria for approval as an RSO (Radiation Safety Officer) under the Queensland Radiation Safety Act 1999, the NSW Radiation Control Act 1990 and the Federal ARPANS Act 1998. The course deals with the management of radiation safety programs for sealed (including industrial gauges) and unsealed sources and X-ray devices in a variety of environments.
The learning program is practical in nature - participants will be involved in a number of small group workshops and discussions centred on concepts and problems useful to RSOs. Topics include:
- Interactions of radiation with matter
- Detection and measurement of radiation
- Radiation gauges
- Neutron moisture gauges, neutron interactions and shielding
- Transport of radioactive materials
- Radioactive source security
- Complying with State and Federal legislative requirements
- Complying with National Health and Medical Research Council (NH&MRC) and Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear Safety Agency (ARPANSA) guidelines and Australian Standards
- Risk assessment
Assessment for the course is multiple scenario-based problem solving exercises.
