This learning program is designed to meet the requirements for a Radiation Transport license from Queensland Radiation Health.

Duration

Individual, self paced via workbooks and practical at your workplace - approximately half a day.

Objective

This learning program is designed to meet the criteria for a "Use" license under the Queensland Radiation Safety Act 1999 for persons transporting radioactive materials, excluding: Fissile materials, Bulk LCA and Enhanced Security Sources. The course covers radiation safety issues related to typical transport situations for both sealed and unsealed, isotopes and a wide variety of activities transported in the fields of biology, biochemistry, pathology, nuclear medicine, industrial gauges, soil moisture gauges, borehole logging and industrial radiography sources.

The group based learning program is practical in nature; participants will be involved in a number of small group workshops and discussions centred on concepts and problems useful to transport practices. Topics include:

  • Basics of radiation physics
  • Units
  • Biological effects and measuring risk
  • Identification and control of internal and external hazards
  • Packaging requirements
  • Placarding
  • Transport paperwork
  • Incident management

Assessment for the course is competency based. The assessment includes short answer questions and the evaluation of practical transport scenarios. All questions must be answered correctly to achieve competency.
